Doggysitting

Saturday, November 29, 2008
One of the perks of being in the Greyhound family is that we get the opportunity to doggysit every now and then. This weekend we welcomed Lulu, a female brindle, into our house for a sleepover.

Initially Belle seemed a little jealous of Lulu, but it didn't take long for her to get over it. Beau didn't seem to mind at all after the initial onslaught of sniffing. After they played in the backyard for a few minutes the trio went inside, with Beau finding his cage for a nap, and the ladies chewing on some rawhide bones for most of the evening.

I have to say it was a pleasure watching Lulu. She was very well behaved, and a sweetheart to boot! I was a little sad to see her go after just one day with us, but she's off to Trina's house for a night there, before heading home to her family. She's certainly welcome again, and I'm sure Beau and Belle would agree!

The dog days of.... fall

Tuesday, November 25, 2008
We were blessed with temperatures in the upper 50s this weekend, so I decided to take advantage of the sun and sudo-warmth by letting the dogs out to play in the backyard.

Beau is no stranger to lounging in the sun. He enjoys taking every spare moment to plop down in the back yard getting some rays.

The dogs managed to do some much needed running and frolicking in the yard.

Beau even made a few moves on Belle, trying to sneak in a kiss or two.

But, being the queen that she is, Belle resisted. As if!

But all of that being said, they are still becoming best friends!

We are getting ready for Thanksgiving dinner with Iva's family this year, and we'll also be babysitting another female greyhound, Lulu, on Friday and Saturday. We will post pictures later this week.

We wish everyone a safe and happy Thanksgiving!

Friday Reflections

Friday, November 21, 2008
Looking back on the week I realized that we've now had Beau for a little more than a month. It's been interesting getting back in the swing of being a dog owner again, but every minute of it has been great! I have to say that Beau was a pleasure to bring in to our home. He was very easy and adapted to his new home quite well.

Belle has been with us now just shy of two weeks and she is showing improvements every day. She now knows kennel up means time to get in her cage. She's still a bit confused about this one because she usually goes in Beau's cage instead of her own; but she's making progress!

So far she's only had one accident in the house [knock on wood] which was my fault. She's learned how to tell us that she wants to go outside by walking up to us and staring from about 1 ft away. This is translated in dog language to "Hey person! Take me out!"

I'm not sure if she learned this from Beau, or if it's just something built in during the domestication of the world's greatest animal. Just the other day Beau was doing the "take me out" stare and I whispered to him "do you want to go outside?" He jumped up in the air enthusiastically and gave me a hefty WOOOF in response. The survey says that means YES!

Belle's newest thing we're working through is waking up almost four hours on the dot after we go to bed. If you read all of the greyhound literature, it says they are used to this type of schedule. In the cage and out four hours later to relieve themselves. The problem is she wasn't exhibiting this behavior until just this week. My observation is that she doesn't need to go outside right at that time, but she just wakes up out of habit. I have been taking her out when she wakes up, mostly because she wakes me up and then I can't get back to sleep, but I am planning on making a chance to that quickly. I figure she will continue on this behavior so long as I take her out, so we will be working on that over the next few days.

I'll leave you with a couple of photos from this week.

First off, Belle being the queen that she is on her throne: the couch.

And next, Beau being as cute as ever. He's a bit camera shy!

Mr. Fatso - The Diet Begins

Wednesday, November 19, 2008
We never realized how big Beau was until we adopted Belle. Beau has about 25 lbs on Belle, and most of it is in his butt. He's taken on a new name around the house: Mr. Fatso.

So yesterday Mr. Fatso started his new diet. He's now getting 1 and 3/4 cups of food twice per day, instead of his 2+ cups twice per day.

I've already noticed a change in his eating behaviors because of the new diet. Normally Beau eats a few bites, wanders around for a bit, lays down, and then eventually lumbers back to his food bowl for another few nibbles. This can take hours, unless you take the food bowl into his cage, so he can lounge in luxury while eating. However, this morning he ate all of his food at once! I suspect this is because he is receiving less food, so he's ultimately hungrier.

He has also noticed that Belle hovers around the kitchen like a buzzard during feeding time. Yesterday he saw her standing within 5ft of his bowl and quickly ran back over to finish his food, as if to say "I was just kidding, I'm not really done eating."

Belle knows good and well that she doesn't get her brother's food, but if it stands to correct his slow eating habits, I'm all for buzzard behavior!

Mr. Fatso needs to lose at least 5 lbs in the next couple of weeks. Our adoption counselor Trina pointed out that he has a "tabletop" on his rear end. This is a tell-tale sign that your greyhound is a fatso!

Beau really just wanted to get liposuction to remove the excess fat on his booty, but I told him that's not the way to go about it. He'll be receiving some additional exercise and a decrease in doggy treats over the next couple of weeks. Once he's down to wait he can resume normal spoiling.

Stay tuned for more details on his weight loss regimen.

Bone Wars

Thursday, November 13, 2008

Just before we adopted Belle we went out and purchased some compressed rawhide bones for the dogs. We bought the 10" compressed raw hides for Beau, and 6" bones for Belle.

On Monday night I gave one 6" bone to each of the dogs and they each picked a cage and sat happily gnawing on their bone. Then the first round of Bone Wars began.

Belle followed Iva out of the room for a moment and Beau made his move. Attack number one. Beau 1, Belle 0. Beau then proceeded to gather the other bone from elsewhere in the living room bringing his cage total to three. Beau 3, Belle 0.

Iva returned to the living room, along with her couch cuddling buddy, and I wandered off to the kitchen, Beau following closely behind. Belle hadn't noticed that Beau stole her bone, but she instinctively went into his cage to take his bone while he wasn't looking.

Much to her surprise, she found three bones! Jackpot! You should have seen her face! Belle 3, Beau 3. Tie ballgame.

This has continued the last few days, without a clear winner in the Bone War count. However, I think I'm giving Belle the temporary crown of "Bone War Queen" for her cunning in the art of bone stealing.

Just a few minutes ago I decided to crack out some new bones. I gave Beau a 10" rawhide and he trotted off to his cage. I then opened the 6" bone package which Belle was waiting patiently for. Beau leaves his cage and heads over to to gather another bone, which he succeeded in doing. However, the excitement of another bone got the best of him. Before he could think about it, Belle had snuck back into his cage, grabbed his 10" bone and made herself comfy on her bed near the fireplace.

Now that's clever!

Belle is holding the first ever Bone War crown. All hail Belle, Bone War Queen.
